Reactor Void Water Diversion Project

Technical Solutions 24 Seven successfully led the design and coordination of the Dungeness Reactor Void Water Diversion Project, leading to its successful completion in September 2023. This complex project required the detailed design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of a pipework system specifically designed to divert void water from the reactors to the surface water drainage network. This was achieved in strict compliance with the exacting requirements of the Functional Design Specification.

The project was carried out in two distinct phases. The first phase involved the development of a comprehensive and fully detailed design. The subsequent phase, subject to the necessary approval agreements, covered the procurement and manufacturing aspects of the system.

During the first phase, Technical Solutions 24 Seven developed the concept and schematic design, resulting in the submission and approval of a concept schematic. This phase also completed a detailed Reactor Void Water diversion design, including drawings and calculations.

In the second phase, Technical Solutions 24 Seven undertook the procurement and manufacture of the system. This included the development and agreement of acceptance criteria for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of eight new pump skids. In addition, Technical Solutions 24 Seven successfully completed a suitable route and connection to divert the existing RVW pipework to the surface drains.

The design work was extensive and included a variety of deliverables, including an engineering report, hazard identification (HAZID), design basis outline, design risk assessment, layout drawings, process flow diagrams (PFD), site surveys, engineering resource plan, technical issues register, design proposal drawings and fabrication drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams/engineering flow diagrams, updated design risk assessments, detailed control philosophy, software management and control plan and calculations (electrical, process, structural).

As project leader, Technical Solutions 24 Seven played a key role in coordinating subcontractors involved in the project, ensuring seamless collaboration during the design, installation and close-out phases. This project is a testament to Technical Solutions 24 Seven’s ability to manage and deliver complex engineering projects, particularly in the nuclear decommissioning sector.
